What business credit is
Business credit is a credit history for your business, kept by business credit bureaus such as Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business and Equifax Business. It is separate from your personal credit report. Lenders and suppliers may check it when you apply for business financing, vendor terms or business credit cards.
For most freelancers it is optional. It becomes useful if you plan to borrow, lease equipment or buy from suppliers on terms.
Six steps to start
| Step | What it is | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Register your business | Form an LLC or corporation with your state, or operate as a sole proprietor under your own name or a registered trade name. | State filing fees vary |
| 2. Get an EIN | An Employer Identification Number from the IRS identifies your business for taxes and bank accounts. | Free from irs.gov |
| 3. Open a business bank account | Keeps business income and expenses separate from personal money. | Varies by bank |
| 4. Get a D-U-N-S number | Dun & Bradstreet's business identifier, used to create a D&B business credit file. | Free from Dun & Bradstreet |
| 5. Open trade lines that report | Net 30 vendor accounts and business credit cards that report payments to business credit bureaus. | Varies by vendor |
| 6. Pay early or on time | Payment history is a core part of business credit scores. | n/a |
The IRS says you never have to pay a fee for an EIN; avoid websites that charge for one. Dun & Bradstreet offers D-U-N-S numbers free.
What a Net 30 account is
A Net 30 account lets your business buy now and pay the invoice within 30 days. Some Net 30 vendors report your payments to business credit bureaus, which can help start a business credit file. Check which bureaus a vendor reports to before you apply, and pay every invoice on time: late payments can be reported too.

How this connects to your taxes
Business credit does not change your tax bill. Keeping business money separate does make it easier to track deductible expenses and report income on Schedule C. See our self-employed tax guide and the best tax software for freelancers.
FAQ
Do I need an LLC to build business credit?
No. Sole proprietors can get an EIN and a D-U-N-S number. Some lenders and vendors prefer or require a registered business entity.
Does business credit affect my personal credit?
They are separate reports. Some business accounts require a personal guarantee or check your personal credit when you apply, so read the terms.
Is an EIN free?
Yes. The IRS says you never have to pay a fee for an EIN.
How long does it take to build business credit?
It depends on how many accounts report and your payment history. No service can guarantee a score or approval.
