What an extension does
Form 4868 gives you an automatic extension to file your 2026 federal return, moving the deadline from April 15, 2027 to October 15, 2027. You do not need to give a reason.
It is an extension to file, not to pay. Any tax you owe is still due on April 15.
Three ways to request one
- Pay online and check the box: pay what you owe through an IRS online payment option and indicate the payment is part of an extension request. You get a confirmation number, and no separate form is needed.
- IRS Free File: request an automatic extension electronically through Free File.
- Form 4868: file it through tax software or an e-file provider, with a tax professional, or by mail. You estimate your tax and subtract what you have already paid.
Estimate and pay what you owe
Estimate your tax using last year's return and this year's income documents, and pay as much as you can by April 15. Interest is charged on any unpaid balance from the original due date.
Penalties to avoid
| Penalty | Rate |
|---|---|
| Failure to file (no extension) | 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25% |
| Failure to pay | 0.5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25% |
| Interest | Charged on unpaid tax and penalties |
Filing an extension removes the failure-to-file penalty if you file by October 15. It does not stop the failure-to-pay penalty or interest.
Special cases
US citizens and resident aliens living outside the United States on the regular due date get an automatic two-month extension, to June 15, 2027 for 2026 returns, and can request more time with Form 4868. People affected by a federally declared disaster may have more time to file; check the IRS disaster relief page.
Do not forget your state
Many states accept the federal extension, but some require their own form. Check your state tax agency's rules.
FAQ
Is a tax extension automatic?
Yes. If you file Form 4868 or make an online payment marked as an extension by April 15, 2027, the six-month extension is automatic.
Does an extension give me more time to pay?
No. The IRS says the extension is only for filing. Tax owed is still due April 15, 2027; interest and late-payment penalties apply to unpaid tax.
How do I request an extension?
Pay online and mark it as an extension, use IRS Free File, or file Form 4868.
