The 2026 brackets at a glance
There are still seven federal income tax rates: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. The IRS adjusts the income ranges for inflation each year. These are the ranges for tax year 2026, which you report on the return you file in 2027.

How tax brackets work
Brackets are marginal: each rate applies only to the slice of income inside that range, not to all of your income. Moving into a higher bracket never reduces your take-home pay; only the dollars above the threshold are taxed at the higher rate.
Brackets apply to taxable income, which is your income after the standard deduction or itemized deductions. For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly.
Worked example
A single filer with $60,000 of taxable income in 2026 pays:
| Bracket | Income taxed | Tax |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $12,400 | $1,240 |
| 12% | $38,000 | $4,560 |
| 22% | $9,600 | $2,112 |
| Total | $60,000 | $7,912 |
That is a top (marginal) rate of 22% but an effective rate of about 13.2% of taxable income. Credits such as the Child Tax Credit then reduce the tax further.
Lower your taxable income
Contributions to a traditional 401(k), traditional IRA or HSA can reduce taxable income, and new deductions for tips, overtime, seniors and car loan interest apply from 2025 to 2028.
